What is PTS?

Post Traumatic stress (PTS) is a natural response after a frightening or overwhelming event. It's a recognised psychological response to events that are overwhelming, frightening, or deeply distressing.

What is PTSD

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a diagnosed mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing something traumatic. It's a recognised psychological response to events that are overwhelming, frightening, or deeply distressing.

Trauma affects people differently. PTSD can develop shortly after a traumatic event, or it can emerge weeks, months, or even years later. It can follow a single incident or build up after repeated or prolonged experiences.

Common causes include accidents, assault, abuse, bereavement, medical trauma, workplace incidents, and experiences in the armed forces or emergency services.

Complex PTSD (C‑PTSD)

C‑PTSD develops after prolonged, repeated, or inescapable trauma, such as childhood abuse, domestic violence, captivity, or chronic neglect.

It includes all PTSD symptoms, plus difficulties with:

Emotional regulation, self-worth and shame, relationship and trust, feeling permanently damaged or unsafe.

Developmental Trauma / Developmental PTSD

Developmental trauma refers to trauma which occurred in early childhood, especially when the caregiver is the source of fear or neglect. It affects:

Attachment, emotional development, identity formation, the nervous system and stress responses.

Whatever the cause, your experience is valid, and support is available.

Signs and Symptoms of PTSD

PTSD can present in several ways, and not everyone's experience looks the same. You might be considering PTSD counselling if you recognise any of the following:

  • Intrusive memories, flashbacks, or vivid nightmares related to a past event

  • Feeling on edge, hypervigilant, or easily startled

  • Avoiding people, places, or situations that remind you of what happened

  • Emotional numbness, feeling detached, or struggling to connect with others

  • Persistent feelings of guilt, shame, or self-blame

  • Difficulty sleeping, concentrating, or feeling settled

  • Sudden and intense emotional or physical reactions

  • A sense that the world is no longer safe or that you can't trust people

How PTSD Trauma Counselling Can Help

One-to-one counselling for PTSD provides a safe, consistent, and confidential space to work through what you've experienced at a pace that feels manageable for you.

It can help you to:

  • Make sense of your symptoms and understand how trauma affects the mind and body

  • Take back some control over your physical trauma responses

  • Process traumatic memories in a way that reduces their intensity

  • Develop practical tools for managing triggers, flashbacks, and difficult moments

  • Rebuild a sense of safety, trust, and control

  • Work towards feeling more present in your own life again

No. You can contact Sheffield Mind directly and refer yourself. There's no need to go through your GP, although you're welcome to involve them if you'd prefer.
